McEntee a quarter-final doubt for Armagh

TONY McENTEE looks likely to be ruled out of Armagh’s Bank of Ireland All-Ireland Football quarter-final against either Kerry or Longford at Croke Park on August 5.

McEntee sustained a leg injury in the Ulster Championship semi-final replay win over Fermanagh and he missed the Ulster final win over Donegal.

However, forward Brian Mallon will be fit for the quarter-final, having resumed training after an ankle injury.

Galway manager Peter Ford will announce his team for Saturday’s All-Ireland qualifier with Westmeath after training on Thursday.

The Tribesmen were originally expected to release the starting 15 last night, but have opted to wait until later in the week.

Promising corner forward Sean Armstrong is a definite absentee with a hamstring injury, while there is a serious doubt surrounding the experienced Derek Savage, who missed the Connacht final defeat against Mayo.

Jarlath Fallon will be pushing for inclusion after returning to training, while Paul Clancy is expected to return after making a brief appearance as a substitute in the provincial decider.

Meanwhile, Donegal corner-back Paddy Campbell’s appeal against his four-week ban is likely to be heard later today.

As it stands, Campbell will miss Sunday’s qualifier against Fermanagh and the quarter-final against Cork if Donegal beat the Erne County.

Campbell was banned last week arising from an incident in the Ulster semi-final against Derry five weeks ago. The time lag in handing out the suspension to the Glenties man infuriated Donegal officials and it is no surprise that they are appealing against the ban.

Last week, the GAA’s Central Disciplinary Committee studied video evidence of the incident which led to Enda Muldoon’s red card in the provincial semi-final.

Muldoon lashed out at Campbell after he had been struck by the corner-back, but the Glenties man initially escaped any sanction.

If Campbell is ruled out, Donegal manager Brian McIver may draft Raymond Sweeney into the full-back line.
