McCarthy ‘very doubtful’ for Wexford
The outstanding attacker, turned midfielder, sustained a broken finger on his right hand during their semi-
final victory over Offaly.
The finger was badly swollen following the game but x-rays on the following Wednesday, once the swelling had subsided, revealed a clean break.
“It will be touch and go whether the player makes the final against Kilkenny,” said manager John Conran.
“He has been told that it will take up to three weeks, which, with everything going right would leave him
only returning to hurling training the week of the game. We’ll just have to wait and see,” added Conran.
McCarthy would be a huge loss to Wexford’s chances of regaining the Leinster crown they last held in 1997.
He has been playing very well as midfield partner to Adrian Fenlon and his experience is a huge benefit to the young players around him.
The news though is better for Dave Guiney (shoulder) and Ger Coleman (hand) who missed out on the semi-
final. Both have returned to full training with the squad, with Conran reporting no further injury worries.
Meanwhile, there have been renewed calls for helmets with full facial guards to be made mandatory for all hurlers after a young player in Kilkenny lost his sight in an eye following an incident in a game at the weekend.
Tullaroan player John Coogan, whose brothers Jimmy and Ken are members of the Kilkenny senior hurling panel, received an accidental blow in a championship game against Dicksboro.
John was taken to Ardkeen Hospital in Waterford but the damage was too severe to save the sight. GAA President Sean Kelly will be guest of honour at a special fundraising lunch for the Clane club in Kildare.
The event on June 27 will also feature guest speaker, Tipperary’s All-Ireland winning player and manager Michael Babs Keating.
