Galway make one change for U-21 final
The County Board hears an appeal from them against their dismissal from the competition following their
refusal to play extra time in their second round game against Carraroe.
The Galway Football Board pointed out the clubs had agreed that in the new league format, which included a backdoor system, extra time would be played up to and including second round games in the championship.
Killererin, the home club of Padraig Joyce, have had their case examined at different stages by the Connacht Council, a disputes committee in Croke Park and most recently by the Football Board which declined to change the original decision to throw them out of the championship.
Currently, Annaghdown, Milltown and Mountbellew/Moylough are through to the semi-finals. The other semi-final has been held up by the dispute.
If the Killererin appeal is rejected by the county board, Corofin and Carraroe will play off to decide the fourth semi-final place. Alternatively, if they are readmitted they will have to play Carraroe again. Galway, meanwhile, have made one change in their line-up for next Sunday’s All-Ireland under-21 football final against Dublin in Portlaoise (3 pm).
John Devane, 18, from the Milltown club, who made a big impression when introduced in the semi-final against Kerry, retains his place in the attack which results in David Hanley losing his place. And a positional switch in defence sees Michael Comer moved to the right corner.
The team was announced following the final training session at the Football Board’s floodlit facility at Loughgeroge, near Claregalway.
The introduction of Devane, at centre-forward, sees senior player Matthew Clancy named at right half-forward, with Damien Burke moving to the left flank.
In defence, Michael Comer is chosen in the right corner, with Clive Monaghan moving from there to take over his position at left-half.
The team will be captained by senior player Joe Bergin.
