Glenville master Carbery for first title

The Imokilly outfit proved too strong for holders Carbery Rangers in winning the Cork County IFL title for the first time.

True Carbery Rangers were much depleted after a long season. They looked a tired outfit as they failed to cope with Glenville's no-nonsense defending and marauding play. Indeed Carbery only scored once from play and failed to find the target for the entire second-half, beaten all over the park by a Glenville side that signalled their intentions from the off.

Glenville had many stars - two superb wing-backs in Sean O'Callaghan and Kieran O'Keeffe, and two industrious wing-forwards in Brendan Healy and Paudie Cahill, the latter superb all through.

With Noel O'Riordan and Des Ryan giving the Carbery pairing of Kevin McMahon and Gearóid Ryan little change, and Kieran Coakley and John Halbert a handful up front, Glenville controlled the match.

Once Eoin O'Reilly put the home side 0-3 to 0-2 in front in the 10th minute they proceeded to outplay Carbery with some superb defending and smooth running play.

Coakley, so menacing up front, soon scored his second point and, leading 0-4 to 0-2 after the opening quarter, Glenville never took their foot off the pedal. Carbery were only to score two more points for the rest of the game courtesy of a John Murphy '45 and a Maurice Moore free as Glenville, with Paudie Cahill an excellent play-maker, began to show real menace.

Coakley, with his third offering, and Halbert tacked on further points, but it was O'Callaghan's 28th minute effort, after fine work by O'Keeffe, that stood out as Glenville led 0-8 to 0-4 at the break.

There was no respite for an out of touch Carbery side in the second-half. Midfielder O'Riordan got in on the scoring act for Glenville, O'Callaghan helped himself to a second and the busy Paudie Cahill and Halbert put the home side out of sight entering the final quarter, leading 0-13 to 0-4.

Just one point in a free ridden final quarter, O'Riordan having the last say. Glenville were simply the masters - the result a huge fillip as they prepare for a championship tilt with Newcestown in buoyant mood.
