Tipperary hadn't won a single game in the championship between 1973 and 1983 and here they were on the brink of an overdue breakthrough. Twice in the opening half hour they had to replace injured defenders and Bobby Ryan was forced off in the 45th minute. This led to Seamus Power being controversially switched to corner-back from full-forward where he had been a major threat (scoring 1-6).
Cork were marginally superior in the first half, but were outhurled for much of the second. With seven minutes to go, Tipp led by four points, but Cork drew level from a Tony O'Sullivan goal. Then, came a crucial interception by Cork defender Denis Mulcahy.
