Kennelly ‘willing to burst a gut to get on the Irish team’
The 23-year-old who represented Kerry at minor and U21 level admitted to being upset by reports that he would turn his back on Ireland for the October tour.
“I don’t know where this story came from,” the Sydney Swans player said yesterday. “I have had a couple of calls and text messages and I am angry that people are saying or writing these things. It will never happy in a million years.
“I am just doing my best to get on the Irish team and help them to win the Series in October.”
Kennelly has represented Ireland in the 2001 and 2002 tours. He acted as an advisor to John O’Keeffe’s squad last year as he recovered from post-season surgery.
His career in the Australian code has been hugely impressive with a National AFL rising star nomination two years ago along with numerous club accolades.
“Things are going well. We have won six of our last seven games. A lot of players are back from injury and they are bringing experience with them which will be vital in the run in to the play-offs.
“But once the season is over, whenever that might be, I want to start focusing on the Series and getting on the Irish team, and I am willing to burst a gut to get on the side.”
The first test between Ireland and Australia will take place in Croke Park on October 17. The second will be played a week later.
Australia are the holders of the series.
