Cork hoping to repeat floodlit success against Galway

CORK have plans to stage another league game under lights next month. County secretary Frank Murphy revealed after Saturday night’s tie that they hoped to play the football game against Galway, scheduled for March 2, under the same arrangement.

The GAC is in favour, but Cork will need the co-operation of the Galway management and board officials.

Predictably, Cork were thrilled with the success of the weekend experiment. Frank Murphy pointed out that as a result of the redevelopment of the ground, it was the first time they were permitted to exceed a 10,000 capacity (now set at 16,400).

This ceiling had been set by the safety authorities.

With a crowd of 13,421 present on the night, it was more than double the previous highest of 7,100 at the former soccer venue for a 1998 NHL tie against Tipperary.

Last season the meeting between the counties at Páirc Uí Chaoimh attracted an attendance of 14,500.

Meanwhile, Cork won’t have any of the Nemo Rangers players for their away game with All-Ireland champions Armagh next Sunday.
