Micko would love to manage the Irish Rules team
The 67-year-old legend has been repeatedly snubbed by authorities in the selection of a manager for the Rules series with Australia, despite his legendary status and peerless credentials.
But O’Dwyer said he bears no resentment and would willingly take the position if offered by GAA president, Sean Kelly. That decision is likely to be made within the next month, after John O’Keeffe indicated that he would not be putting his name forward for re-nomination.
Said O’Dwyer: “I still believe it is a huge honour to manage your country in any sport. I’ve been overlooked a few times in the past, but I’m always hopeful.”
O’Dwyer flies out to South Africa with his Leinster Championship winning Laois players next week for a well deserved holiday, having raised almost €100,000 for the players’ fund.
O’Dwyer, the selectors and the entire panel sold over 60,000 framed pictures around the county, while the Kerry maestro also helped organise a bumper golf outing in Portarlington, which raised €30,000.
Dominic McKinley has quit his post as manager of the Derry senior hurlers following a poor turnout at the squad’s first training session last week.
Out of a squad of 40 players, just 11 turned out for the opening session, a number that enraged the boss as the countdown to the start of the NHL campaign begins. McKinley, who took the job of manager 18 months ago, recently quit his role as manager of the Antrim camogie boss to concentrate his efforts on the Oak Leafers.
Omagh Town soccer star Colm McCullagh could have a big choice to make before the end of the Irish League season. McCullagh has been called into Mickey Harte’s Tyrone squad for tomorrow’s Dr McKenna Cup clash with Derry.
The talented 27-year-old will be on the bench for the Healy Park derby, and is almost certain to make an appearance at some stage.
Should he impress on Sunday, McCullagh will come into the reckoning for a place in the Red Hand squad for the National League, a scenario which would almost certainly call a halt, at least temporarily, to his soccer career.
The Defence Forces will participate in the Connaught FBD Winter League this season.
It is their first venture into competitive inter-county football and hopes are high that they can give a good account of themselves.
The team consists of personnel from the brigades and formations of the Defence Forces with some well known inter-county players featuring in the line up.
However, the lesser known lights, the players hoping to make the break through to county football, will be watched closely and recent form indicates that these are the players that can help spring a shock result.
GAA president Sean Kelly will be in attendance in Kanturk, Co Cork, tomorrow for the final of the Rathmore Credit Union Duhallow Under-21 football tournament between Mid Kerry and Douglas (throw-in 2.30pm).
Douglas, playing in the competition for the first time, caused something of a surprise by knocking out the hosts Duhallow in the semi-final.
Dan Doona and Donnacha Walsh return from injury for Mid Kerry.
