Kilkenny not resting on laurels

THERE is little fear of the Kilkenny hurlers taking their success for granted.
Kilkenny not resting on laurels

On the night of their All-Ireland winning medal presentation, manager Brian Cody announced that the panel will be assembling on December 5 in James’ Park, “togged out, at 7.30pm ready to start preparations for next year!”

GAA president Sean McCague made the formal presentation at the event where the guest of honour was Martin White - the only surviving member of the team which beat Clare in the 1932 All-Ireland final - and the retiring John Power was given a standing ovation.

Kilkenny board chairman Ned Quinn said that the 2002 team would be recognised as one of the greatest ever to represent the county and that this would be reflected when great teams came to be selected in the future.

He paid a special tribute to Brian Cody, pointing out that he had emulated his achievement as a player 20 years ago when he led Kilkenny to League, Leinster and All-Ireland wins.

Mr McCague, who also received a special presentation at the ceremony told the 450 guests that he had held a wish at the start of his presidency to present an All-Ireland trophy to a ‘new’ team. While it had happened in football, with Armagh, he recognised that it was very difficult in hurling.

Brian Cody admitted that they were fortunate to have been able to work with such a talented group of players, including those who were involved in the League but didn’t make it championship. “The hallmarks of a very good team are dedication, commitment, determination, a wonderful spirit and a great ambition to go out and play for the county and try and be successful,’’ he said.

Team captain Andy Comerford said: “Remember, don’t gloat on what we have achieved; just be proud of what we have done.’’ On behalf of the players, he made a presentation to John Power, whom he praised for “epitomising everything that was required to train and win an All-Ireland.”

Minor coach Nicky Cashin made a plea to the GAA authorities to increase panels from 24 to 30, in line with what had been adopted for senior teams.
