GAA: Newtown earn their break

All’s well that ends well was the reaction of Newtownshandrum manager Patsy Morrissey to this weekend’s All-Ireland club hurling quarter-final win over London’s Fr Murphy’s, in Ruislip.

Due to the less-than-impressive itinerary arranged by Croke Park, the Cork and Munster champions were forced to journey to London on Saturday last in the middle of the night; a 4.45am coach journey to be in Cork airport for 6.00am, with the game being played later that day, at 1.30pm.

Ultimately Newtown won by nine points but for long periods it was a close-run thing; at the end of the first half the visitors were just one point ahead, 1-5 to 1-4.
