Tipperary have no answer to rampant Rebels
Generally, they were in command after absorbing early Tipperary pressure, gaining confidence from two first half goals and confirming their superiority by going in at half-time with an eight point advantage.
It was a performance which pleased coach Sean O’Brien, the former Midleton and Cork star, particularly once the team had settled. Tipperary gained the opening score through their captain and full-forward Tom Moylin, but Cork were quick to respond and the teams were level on three points each before Rathluirc’s John Quinlan got the first of two goals from penalties.
That came in the 14th minute and it was a reward for improving Cork play, especially in defence. A second goal followed from Vincent Morrissey, in the 22nd minute and it had Cork nicely positioned with a seven points lead. Tipperary made strenuous efforts to lift their challenge, but failed to get the ball in the net and finished the half trailing by 2-9 to 0-7.
Tipperary made a determined effort to get back into the game on the resumption, making a number of substitutions, but progress was minimal. Again, Cork’s forwards penetrated more frequently and the pressure earned Quinlan a 50th minute penalty which he converted to give Cork an eleven points lead.
The game was as good as decided by the time Tom Moylin, on the day their best player, registered Tipperary’s goal. The consolation score came from a well-struck 20 metres free., Scorers: Cork: J. Quinlan 2-1 (2-0 frees); J. O’Callaghan 0-6 (0-4 frees); V. Morrissey 1-2; B. Coleman and R. O’Dwyer 0-2 each; J. Hughes, S. Hayes and D. O’Riordan 0-1 each.
