Sin bin system to be introduced in ladies football

A SIN BIN system, similar to that implemented in rugby, will be introduced in this year's ladies football championship.

Sin bin system to be introduced in ladies football

The motion was passed following a long debate at the annual congress of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association of Ireland in Galway on Saturday.

Delegates believe that such a deterrent needs to be introduced in a bid to eradicate the physicality of the game.

Galway, Kerry and Mayo are now joined in a three-way tie at the top of Division 1A, after yesterday's round of games in the Suzuki Ladies NFL.

Galway had a convincing win over heretofore unbeaten Kerry, by 1-14 to 0-7, in Tuam. The Connacht side led by 0-5 to 0-3 at the break, but took over completely in the second half, with Annette Clarke and Lisa Cohill outstanding at midfield.

Mayo had to battle from a one-point half-time deficit to claim two points, when they eventually saw off a determined Monaghan challenge, 1-11 to 1-9, at Ballinrobe. Therese McNally threatened to spoil what was predicted to be an easy win for the homeside, with a personal tally of 1-7.

Longford were on the receiving end of another trouncing, when Cork ran out easy 5-24 to 1-5 winners, at Donoghmore.

In Division 1B, Meath have taken control of the top spot, following a merited 1-13 to 1-5 win over Waterford, at Dunsany. Going into the weekend's games, the Royals were joined at the top by Waterford, Dublin and Tyrone, but as the only one of the four to claim full points, they are now on top with six points, and one game remaining.

Laois picked up their first points of the league with a 4-11 to 2-12 win over an under-strength Tyrone side, at Dromard. In Strokestown, Roscommon put a halt to Dublin's good run when they emerged unlikely winners by a point, 1-8 to 1-7. In Division 2A, Louth increased their lead at the top with a 3-9 to 1-9 win over Cavan.
