Although a tremendous under-age hurler, he had little to show for his four minor years and must have despaired of ever winning that coveted All-Ireland medal.

After leaving the minor grade it didn’t get any better, losing out in the senior final to Kilkenny in 1992, and he looked destined to end his career without any major honours, apart from a National League medal as captain in 1993.
