St. Mary’s going for four on the trot

ST MARY’S, Charleville bid for their fourth consecutive Munster Senior Schools camogie championship title against Loreto, Fermoy at Glanworth this afternoon (3pm).

Complacency will not be a concern according to Vincent Harrington, the champions’ trainer.

“Tradition does not win matches,” he insists. “Both teams have put a lot of hard work into this final and because many are involved with various inter-county selections the girls know each other very well. We are optimistic that we can retain our crown, but there is a wealth of experience on the two sides.”

Aoife Sheehan and Amy McCarthy are gone from last year’s all conquering team but Charleville will boast the talents of Maria (captain), Emer and Áine Watson, Anna Geary, Elaine O’Riordan, Mary Coleman, Sinéad McAuliffe, Aisling O’Brien, Shannon Brosnan and Fiona Morrissey.

However, opposition boss Ger Holland will have his charges well motivated for this tie. These same two teams met in last year’s decider and the likes of Marie O’Neill, Orla Cotter, captain Noreen Mulcahy, Denise Twomey and Valerie McCormack will have learned much from that encounter.

Elsewhere in the B final Carrigaline Community School will entertain Coláiste Mhuire Ennis.

Meanwhile, holders UCC will host NUIG in the quarter-final of the Ashbourne Cup this afternoon at the Mardyke, (2pm).

Though missing Ger Casey, Una O’Dwyer, Eimear McDonnell, Criona Harte and Una O’Donoghue from the 2003 panel, they still have an impressive selection that contains Ciara Healy, captain Rachel Moloney, Sara Hayes, Lizzie Lyng, Joanne O’Callaghan, Meadhbh Nash, Emer Dillon and Ann Hardiman. Lourda Kavanagh will lead the Galway College.

The remaining two games see CIT host MICL with the winners playing UCD (already through to the semis), while UL are at home to WIT.
