Racist taunting of players not confined to Cork

RACIAL tauntings of players is not a malaise confined to Cork.

In his report to the Dublin county convention, secretary John Costello says several incidents have been brought to his attention.

“Nothing has happened at official level because the victims didn’t want to make a fuss, but things have happened and it’s going to creep in more and more,” he said.

“The only way to stop it is by quick and firm action, and that will happen when the first case is reported to us.

“Promoting anti-racism can start with the Games Promotion Officers, part of whose brief involves preparing educational programmes on things like drugs,” Costello said.

GAA PRO Danny Lynch said there is a rule in the official guide governing such behaviour: “We will not tolerate racial comments and strong action will be taken against any perpetrators.” Dohenys and Na Piarsaigh, who were involved in the highly charged Cork SFL final last Sunday are awaiting the outcome of the referee’s report. Both clubs have refused to make any further comment on the alleged racial comments directed at the Ó hAilpín brothers during the game.

The Cork senior hurlers travel to Highbury tomorrow as guests of their sponsors O2, who are also sponsors to Arsenal. They will watch Arsenal’s premiership clash against Blackburn Rovers on Sunday. The draw for the Datapac Sigerson Cup has thrown up a number of mouthwatering fixtures. Holders UUJ will play Sligo IT in a preliminary match with the winners meeting UCC in round one.

The Cork challenge has been strengthened by former county star Don Davis who is doing a higher diploma degree in psychology. Clonakilty’s Padraig Griffin has also returned to do a Higher Diploma in Education and will also be eligible.

The following players are requested to attend at 1.45 pm
