Division 1A hurling counties’ reaction to the proposal to move next year’s final to September as part of the official Ryder Cup programme of events has been mixed.

The game had been proposed to take place in TUS Gaelic Grounds on Tuesday evening, September 14, three days before the first day of the matchplay team golf event, which will be celebrating its 100th anniversary, in Adare Manor.

It had been envisioned the game would be broadcast live on international media platforms as a means of showcasing the native game and Irish culture the week of the biennial clash between Europe and the US, only the second time it has taken place in Ireland.

A statement released by the GAA following the Irish Examiner story on Wednesday read: “The GAA is considering an opportunity that has been presented to it to stage the 2027 Allianz League hurling final in Limerick next September around the Ryder Cup.

“To that end, consultation with the seven teams competing in that division next year will take place and plans for that competition will be confirmed when that process is complete.”

On Wednesday evening, GAA president Jarlath Burns briefed Division 1A county representatives on the proposal in an online meeting. The likes of Clare, Galway and Tipperary are not in favour in the move.

HOPEFUL

Kilkenny chairman PJ Kenny said he had yet to discuss the idea with his management committee but his personal opinion is he would like it to happen.

“If anything can be done, I’d love to see it for the promotion of the game,” said Kenny. “There are going to be issues for clubs, there’s no question about it.

“JP (McManus, Adare Manor owner and Limerick GAA sponsor) has done a lot to support the GAA and it would be nice to have the promotional chance, so hopefully they will find a way.”

Tipperary chairman Jimmy Minogue was represented by the county board’s chief executive Murtagh Brennan on the call, but is against the switch.

“It would have an awful bearing on the club championships,” said Minogue.

For inter-county players, I feel once they go out of the championship, the inter-county year should be over and they should be back where they want to be, playing with their clubs.”
