Smyth competes world double
Jason Smyth emulated the achievement of room-mate Michael McKillop in completing a golden double at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon.
Smyth thundered to a new Championship record 10.61 seconds in winning the T13 100m at the Stade du Rhone, blitzing the rest of the field by half a second.
The Derry athlete, who had won the 200m at the weekend, was untroubled as he surged out of the blocks and kept his momentum strong into the second half of the race.
Jonathan Ntutu of South Africa was second in 11.12 seconds, with Radoslav Zlatanov third for Bulgaria in 11.15, meaning Smyth remains undefeated in Paralympic competition.
Smyth, who has now recorded the sprint double at two World Championships as well as two Paralympics, said: “Coming to a major championships is ultimately about winning, the times are irrelevant. I’m delighted – I’ve put a whole lot of hard work in to this.”
Ireland now lie 13th in the medals table with four gold medals.
John McCarthy’s 200m final at T51 level will be rerun Friday morning after original silver medallist Mohamed Berrahal was disqualified for forcing two athletes into adjoining lanes.
The athlete most affected - Finn Toni Piispanen - still won, but judges feel only a re-run will give a true result.
McCarthy had originally finished sixth in the final.
Elsewhere, Tatyana McFadden of the United States claimed her fourth and fifth gold medals of the week by winning both the 1500m and 100m, while compatriot Raymond Martin won his 200m final at T52 to reach four golds.
