Mixed emotions as Heffernan finishes fourth
There were mixed emotions for Cork’s Robert Heffernan after he finished in fourth position in the men’s 50km walk at the London Olympics this morning.
Heffernan knocked almost eight minutes off the existing national record and while he was delighted with his performance and the support he received, the Togher AC athlete was disappointed he couldn’t cap it all off with a medal.
“I dreamt of a medal but I was inside the old Olympics record and did everything I could. I couldn’t do anymore,” he said.
“It’s disappointing that I didn’t win a medal but when I look back at it I’ll be happy with the championships.”
The support seemed to will Heffernan on and he says he enjoyed every moment of the gruelling 31 mile event.
“The crowd was unbelievable, I’ve never experienced anything like it. I’d like to thank everybody so much because the support was unbelievable.
“The race went so fast, I enjoyed the whole lot of it and I’d love to have it in every race.
“I’m just disappointed I didn’t win a medal for Ireland.”
This was his fourth Olympics but in an event where more often than not athletes peak a bit later than in other disciplines, the Corkman confirmed he’ll be around for a bit longer yet.
“I’m after making massive improvements again this year and I’ve matured mentally for competing. I came here to win a medal and to go out and perform in both events and come close is very encouraging.
“I’ll keep going, I’m still in good nick.”
