Varadkar: €19m sports campus not another 'Bertie Bowl'

The Minister for Sport and Tourism has insisted that the development of a new national sports campus does not amount to the return of the "Bertie Bowl".

Leo Varadkar has announced €19m in funding for the project at Abbotstown, which the GAA, FAI and IRFU have all agreed to develop facilities on.

The Sports Campus Ireland project was initially announced by former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in the 1990s before being abandoned.

Work on infrastructure around the site will begin in September.
