Phelps says sorry after pipe picture
Record-breaking Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has apologised after he was pictured with the type of pipe used for smoking cannabis.
The 23-year-old American, the most decorated medallist in Olympic history, was pictured holding a bong in the News of the World newspaper.
Although the swimmer, who won a record eight gold medals at last summerâs Beijing Olympics, has not admitted smoking cannabis from the bong, he said he had acted in an âyouthful and inappropriateâ way.
He said: âI engaged in behaviour which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment.
âIâm 23 years old and despite the successes Iâve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me.
âFor this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.â
The News of the World reported that the picture was taken last November at the University of South Carolina.
Baseball cap-wearing Phelps can be seen holding the glass bong to his mouth in the picture.
Phelps is set to be one of the stars of the London 2012 Olympics.
