Calzaghe and Woods in 'preliminary' talks
Preliminary talks have taken place about Joe Calzaghe and Clinton Woods squaring off in an all-British showdown – but Frank Warren insists negotiations are at a very early stage with several opponents still being considered for the Welshman.
Warren, Calzaghe’s promoter, revealed there are a number of options for Calzaghe’s next fight following his recent unification victory over Mikkel Kessler.
Super-middleweight world champion Calzaghe has long been linked with a move up to Woods’ light-heavyweight division but a fight between the domestic rivals - which Woods claims would be “the biggest fight in Britain” – has never materialised.
Warren admitted there are several options to consider for Calzaghe’s next opponent – including Woods – but insists it is too early to predict which fight will be made.
The Sports Network chief told PA Sport: “The fight was only a few weeks ago and I haven’t had chance to sit down with Joe yet.
“There have been some preliminary talks (with Woods’ camp) but there’s nothing at the moment.”
Woods claims to have received an offer to fight Calzaghe but is leaving discussions to his promoter Dennis Hobson.
“I don’t know anything, I leave all the negotiations to Dennis,” he told PA Sport. “I trust him and I’ve heard nothing, I’ve been with the kids all day.
“I think there has been an offer.
“I just want to fight the best. We got another big offer to fight the American, Chad Dawson, in a unification fight. It’s a big fight.
“I’d rather fight Calzaghe because he’s been champion all this time, I’ve been champion for two or three years, and if he wants to come up to light-heavyweight, that, for me, is a bigger fight.
“I always ignore it all. If it happens it happens. I really do wish it happens because it’s a massive fight. I know I’m 35, but I feel in my prime.”
Woods concedes a Calzaghe fight would represent a difficult challenge.
“There are a few things I’d still have to change for me to beat Calzaghe, but I know I can. I’d go to Calzaghe in Cardiff. I’ll go wherever I have to go.
“I’m at the stage of my career where I just want to go out and prove I’m the best.
“When they talk about champions, they say the biggest fight for Britain is Enzo Maccarinelli-David Haye. But the biggest fight in Britain is Calzaghe and Clinton, I don’t care what anybody says.”
