Gillick in good form

Dubliner David Gillick won his first 400 metres outdoor title at the Woodie's DIY National Track and Field Championships today.

Dubliner David Gillick won his first 400 metres outdoor title at the Woodie's DIY National Track and Field Championships today.

The 2005 European Indoor champion, who missed last year's Nationals due to injury, took a sizeable 0.13 seconds off his personal best time for gold at the Morton Stadium in Santry.

Gillick gained a new PB in Geneva last month but clock 45.67 secs today to boost himself ahead of next month's European Championships in Gothenburg.

Belfast man Paul McKee grabbed silver - he was also second last year to Tomas Coman - in 45.96.

Ballymena sprinter Paul Brizzel, who won the 200m title yesterday, was enraged when he was disqualified from the 100m final for false starting. The 29-year-old was hoping to double up in the absence of Athenry's Paul Hession, who is the fastest Irishman this year with a time of 10.52 secs but is currently injured.

Sli Cualann's Darragh Graham, 22, won the 100m gold in a time of 10.91 seconds with Derry's Jason Smyth in second (10.94).

The visually-impaired Smyth, who is only 18, won two gold medals at the European Paralympics last summer.

US-base Limerick man Liam Reale took the 1500m crown, beating the much fancied Alistair Cragg into second place. Reale timed 3:43.26 in a slow, tactical race.

North Down thrower Eva Massey retained her shot putt title with a winning distance of 15.45 metres, while Anna Boyle won the 100m in a time of 11.77 seconds, 0.3 down on her season's best. The Ballymena woman also won last year's sprint in Santry.
