Kerr looks to build on Australia finish

Robbie Kerr wants a return to the A1 Grand Prix podium in Malaysia this weekend after rediscovering Great Britain’s form in Australia two weeks ago.

Britain started the new championship among the favourites to fight for the title but Kerr has yet to win a race, with his runners-up spot at Eastern Creek just his second podium in eight attempts.

However, Kerr arrives at Sepang determined to replicate his Eastern Creek form, even though he is a novice on the Malaysian Grand Prix circuit.

He said: “I am looking forward to racing in Malaysia. It’s my first time here like most of the drivers.

“We scored two good results in Australia which put us in a good position in the championship and we are looking to do the same again here.

“The circuit is very fast, very flowing and it should suit my style of driving. We need to wait and see where practice goes but I think it should be like Australia with us up at the front.”

Just eight races into its life, A1GP has drawn a mixed reaction so far, but series founder Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum Al Maktoum has declared his £200m (€293m) championship a success.

Spectator numbers have differed wildly from bumper crowds at Brands Hatch and Eastern Creek to feeble turnouts in Portugal and Germany, while driving and marshalling standards have also come under fire.

But Maktoum is convinced A1GP can be declared a success, and said: “We have one of the most exciting racing series on the planet.

“We have wheel-to-wheel racing, overtaking manoeuvres from the front to the back of the field and unpredictable race results with the pit stops pitching some unlikely countries to the top of the leaderboard.

“When the first winner of the World Cup of motorsport is crowned at the end of the season in Shanghai it will be a country that has performed the best technically with drivers that have driven to the best of their ability.”
