Calzaghe vows to KO German opponent
Joe Calzaghe has vowed to “knock out” Mario Veit to ensure he does not suffer a controversial points defeat by Mario Veit in Germany on Saturday.
Calzaghe defends his WBO super-middleweight title against the man he knocked out in the first round four years ago in Veit’s notoriously partisan homeland.
And in only his second fight outside Britain, the undefeated Welshman has vowed to stop Veit inside the distance.
“I will knock him out,” Calzaghe said. “I have twelve rounds to catch him and if it goes the full distance, I will make sure I win every single round.”
Four years ago, Calzaghe stopped the German in 120 seconds in Cardiff, but it is the Welshman who will have revenge on his mind this time.
Veit’s German promoters won a purse bid and forced Calzaghe out of his March meeting with Irishman Brian Magee one day before the fight.
“I was very disappointed to pull out of the fight on such a short notice,” Calzaghe said. “I had trained very hard and not fighting was not easy at all.”
At the weigh-in both fighters scaled 11st 9lb.
