Hamed bailed after car crash quiz

Former world featherweight champion Prince Naseem Hamed was today released on bail after he was arrested over a crash which left a man seriously injured.

The flamboyant fighter was questioned with two other men on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident involving an injury and allegations that they attempted to pervert the course of justice.

Police detained the 31-year-old after his high-powered Mercedes, a Volkswagen Golf and a Ford Mondeo were in collision in Ringinglow Road, Sheffield.

The Golf driver was trapped in the car and had to be airlifted to the Northern General Hospital, with a suspected broken leg and fractures to both arms. A female passenger in the car also suffered cuts and bruises.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Three men have been released on bail this morning to a date in August.

“They were arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident involving an injury and suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice.”

Hamed was widely regarded as one of Britain’s most exciting boxing talents.

Born in Sheffield, to Yemeni parents, Naseem Salim Ali Hamed made his professional debut in 1992 and remained unbeaten until April 2001, when he lost on a unanimous points decision to Mexico’s Marco Antonio Barrera.

He won the European bantamweight title and the World Boxing Council (WBC) international super-bantamweight championship in 1994, before capturing the World Boxing Organisation featherweight title in September 1995.
