Hussain considering his position

Nasser Hussain will today deliberate whether to extend his international career beyond his match-winning 14th Test century against New Zealand at Lord’s.

Hussain’s unbeaten 103 was integral to England taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match npower series, coming as it did on a wearing pitch and against the grain of history.

Only four times have England been successful in pursuit of scores greater than the 282-run target they achieved yesterday and their previous highest successful chase in St John’s Wood was 218 for three against the Kiwis 39 years ago.

However, with debutant Andrew Strauss taking the man-of-the-match honours and captain Michael Vaughan likely to return from a knee injury at Headingley next week, 36-year-old Hussain is considering quitting.

Former captain Hussain had targeted reaching 100 caps at the top level, something he was set to achieve against the West Indies at Edgbaston in July, barring injury or exclusion.

“There are issues for me personally,” Hussain insisted. “I have to make decisions in my life.

“The last thing I want to do is hold anyone up in their careers; I only want to play in a side that wants me and for a country that wants me to play.

“I am going to have to talk to some people in my life and take a non-emotive decision on when would be a good time to call it a day.”
