Jackson tips Gardener for Olympic glory
Colin Jackson claims Jason Gardener can build on his World 60m success and win the Olympic 100m title.
The retired world 110m hurdles record holder believes Gardener has every chance of Olympic glory in what he expects will be an open sprint battle.
“There’s not a doubt in my mind but for the almost constant injuries he’s had over the years, Jason Gardener would have already done something big outdoors,” said Jackson.
Now Bath-based Gardener is training under his former coach Malcolm Arnold, Jackson sees Britain’s first-ever 60m champion regularly.
Commentating at the World Indoor Championships for the BBC, Jackson said: “Under Malcolm’s guidance he has become a much stronger athlete, although he has has always been well focused about his career and aspirations.
“He’s equalled his European record this year (6.46secs) and I believe outdoors he will trim his 100m best by a good margin.
“He’s now managing to stay fairly injury free and the only knocks he is carrying are niggly ones.
“Undoubtedly after last night I believe you will now see the best of him. It was a momentous victory for him and British athletics.
“It’s not a case of him just wanting to succeed, Jason knows he can be the best 100m sprinter in the world.
“If he stays away from injury, I’m telling you he’ll be right up there on the day with the best in Athens.”
