Alonso leading Canadian GP

Ralf Schumacher maintained his lead through the first of the 70 laps but his Williams-BMW team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya was not so lucky.

However, the Williams drivers were eventually displaced by Fernando Alonso.

They then surrendered second place to Ralf’s older brother Michael early in the second circuit.

Jaguar’s Antonio Pizzonia was the race’s first casualty of the race, spinning off after tagging Renault’s Jarno Trulli.

The other Ferrari driver Rubens Barrichello was forced into an early pit stop after a crunching collision.

Montoya recovered from his poor start to consolidate third place but there was no signs of life from Kimi Raikkonen as he continued to labour in 15th.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen’s run of wretched luck continued as he came to a halt on lap seven.
