Promising start for Chambers
European 100metres champion Dwain Chambers opened his 2003 season with a third place in the Modesto Relays in California.
Clocking a promising 10.19 seconds in his first race of the summer, Chambers was beaten by former world 200m title holder Ato Boldon.
The Trinidad and Tobago star, back after a minor hamstring injury, won in a time of 10.15secs with American Jon Drummond second in 10.17secs.
Victory in a windy 200m went to last July’s Commonwealth 100m champion Kim Collins.
The St Kitts and Nevis sprinter ran 20.40secs, winning ahead of Bahamian Dominic Demeritte (20.78secs) and American Mickey Grimes who clocked 20.80secs.
Former Commonwealth champion Julian Golding, who only returned to serious competition indoors this year after a series of injuries, finished fourth in 21.06secs.
Meanwhile, strong winds blew Woodford Green’s Tyrone Edgar to two super-fast performances in the US National Junior College Championships.
Competing for Kansas University, Edgar ran times of 10.04secs and 20.57secs in finishing fifth and fourth in the sprints. The events were won by American Erick Wilson in 9.93secs and 20.19secs.
In his heats – with no wind Edgar ran 10.30secs, within two-hundredths of his best last season, and 20.93secs, a legal personal best by 0.11secs.
