Paula Radcliffe has confirmed she will not not compete in the 5000 metres at the European Athletics Championships.

Radcliffe entered the 5000m insisting it was a race which never figured significantly in her racing programme for this summer.

After claiming gold ahead of Sonia O'Sullivan in the 10000 metres on Tuesday, Radcliffe is hoping to return home on Friday.

The 28-year-old, who set a European record to add to the Commonwealth 5000m mark she achieved when winning the Games gold medal in Manchester, says her priority now is the Chicago Marathon on October 13.

Radcliffe said: "Since the beginning of the year I have been saying my two targets on the track were always the Commonwealth 5000m and the 10000m in Munich. The 5000m at the Europeans was always an option.

"I'm hoping to go home tomorrow and then next week will go to Font Romeau to prepare for Chicago," added Radcliffe who has an apartment at her training base in the French Pyrenees.
