Felix Trinidad is quitting professional boxing.

The Puerto Rican's lawyer says in a statement that Trinidad couldn't get any fights that he wanted.

Nicolas Medina says the 29-year-old boxer decided to quit after being refused fights by Bernard Hopkins and Oscar de la Hoya.

Trinidad's only loss of his career came in a middleweight title fight against American Hopkins.

He won his last fight against France's Hacine Cherifi in May but has now called it a day.

"The only fights remaining would not add anything to his career, but would cause great risk to his health," the statement says.

It adds that Trinidad decided to retire "after carefully evaluating all present factors and listening to the recommendation of his father, manager and trainer".

After his win against Cherifi, Hopkins refused Trinidad's requests for a rematch, as did Oscar de la Hoya, who was previously defeated by Trinidad, Medina says in the statement.

Trinidad is retiring 41-1, with 34 knockouts, and 21 title fights behind him. He is considered by many as the best Puerto Rican boxer ever.

In September 1999, Trinidad had a glorious moment when he beat previously undefeated De la Hoya, adding to his wins the title of WBC welterweight.
