Venables in frame for Leeds job

Terry Venables is one of the contenders to replace David O'Leary as manager of Leeds United.

The former England and Barcelona coach most recently guided Middlesbrough away from the relegation zone two seasons ago.

Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale told the News Of The World: "I have always been an admirer of Terry Venables as a coach and he is on my list."

Ridsdale has promised money will not be a problem when Leeds decide on a new boss.

"We will not fail to get our choice for manager through any lack of ability to finance the deal," he said.

He has confirmed the board have a short-list, believed to be contain six names, and will decide on their number one target at a meeting this weekend.

Meanwhile, O'Leary has no regrets about speaking out against Leeds selling defender Rio Ferdinand.

"I stand by everything I said," O'Leary told the Sunday People. "I cannot say any more at this moment because there are still matters that need to be resolved between my lawyer and Leeds."

Ferdinand is reported to be a £35million target for Manchester United.
