The draw has been made for the 2002 World Matchplay Darts Championship in Blackpool in England.

The event takes place between July 28 and August 3.

The draw for the tournament has produced some tough early matches.

Two-time Matchplay winner Rod Harrington and former world champion Keith Deller must again come face-to face at the first hurdle, with both players looking for a long overdue run of form at a premier event.

Last year’s Stan James World Matchplay finalist Richie Burnett has been handed a tough first round encounter with Chris Mason, while Phil Taylor’s vanquisher in Dublin last October, Kevin Painter, will need all his giant-killing powers to see of Dennis Priestley.

Veteran world champion Bob Anderson has been handed perhaps the toughest first round match against Peter Manley.

Stan James World Matchplay title holder Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor must wait to see who he faces, after being draw against a first round qualifier - yet to be decided.

John Part, Ronnie Baxter and Denis Ovens must also wait to see whom they will play with four places in this year’s tournament up for grabs to PDPA (Professional Darts Player’s Association) members via a play-off to take place on July 19 at the Cardiff International Arena.
