An 85th-minute goal from substitute Alessandro del Piero rescued Italy from defeat against Mexico and secured their passage to the second round of the World Cup.

Trailing 1-0 to Jared Borgetti’s first-half goal for an impressive Mexican side, the Azzurri looked like they would never score after a series of missed chances.
