Athletics: Adere out of Dublin Cross Country race

World 10,000 metres silver medallist Berhane Adere has decided not to take part in the IAAF World Cross Country race in Dublin on Saturday.

Former world marathon record holder Tegla Loroupe this morning explained the absence of Adere from the Ethiopian team at the championships.

‘‘She didn’t do the Ethiopian trials so they did not pick her. Instead she will run in the Lisbon Half Marathon on Sunday,’’ said the tiny Kenyan, part of Volker Wagner’s training group based in Detmold, Germany.

The absence of Adere, who became the first woman to run under eight minutes 30 seconds when smashing the world indoor 3,000m record, plus former champions Derartu Tulu and Gete Wami severely depletes the race.

That the Ethiopian authorities have allowed Adere to miss the annual championships is a surprise.

Normally a three-line whip is issued but the 28-year-old sensation of the indoor season has been granted an exemption.

Wagner explained: ‘‘Adere was not interested in running in the worlds’. She does love cross country and thoroughly enjoyed winning on the Algarve last month. But that was in warm weather.

‘‘There is no way she feels she can perform at her best in cold weather and muddy conditions.’’

Wagner added: ‘‘Instead she will run in Lisbon and plans a few more road races before the track season where she is planning to break the world 5,000m record.

‘‘Then, in the autumn, she will do a marathon.’’
