Boxing: Tyson will not face sex charges

Mike Tyson will not be charged with sexual assault in Las Vegas.

The future of the fight against Lennox Lewis had looked in doubt after Nevada officials refused Tyson a license to box in Las Vegas.

Washington DC granted Tyson a licence, with the 20,000-capacity MCI Center looking the most likely venue for the showdown in June.

Police had sought arrest warrants for Tyson, after they began investigating him in mid-September.

A Las Vegas woman went to hospital with injuries after visiting his home.

A second woman went to police in December and reported she also had been attacked at Tyson's home in November 2000.

Prosecutors reviewed the evidence. They revealed while there was no question sexual relations occurred between the women and Tyson, there was "no possibility whatsoever" to successfully prosecute the former undisputed champion.

They felt it was unclear whether the sexual interaction between each of the two alleged victims and the boxer was consensual or forced.

Tyson's lawyer, Darrow K. Soll, said: "We are grateful that the Clark Country District Attorney's Office conducted an independent review of both cases and did not rely solely on information gathered by the police department.''
