Formula One: British Grand Prix given reprieve
The British Formula One Grand Prix has been given the go-ahead for next year after the sport’s governing body voted in favour of the race keeping its championship status.
Britain's Department of Culture Media and Sport revealed that FIA had voted at a meeting in Monaco to keep the race in the championship calendar but have imposed strict conditions upon event promoters Octagon Motorsports and the British Racing Drivers Club.
The FIA had threatened to take the race away from Silverstone after bad weather and heavy traffic caused parking chaos and congestion at the Northamptonshire circuit last year.
But Octagon’s plans to spend £40m, including £10.6m before next year’s race, on transport infrastructure has helped them convince the FIA they should be allowed to continue to stage the race.
