Athletics: Greene out of World Championships

Maurice Greene has pulled out of the World Championships with a strained left thigh.

Greene ran the third-fastest time in history at 9.82 seconds to win gold in the 100m.

But having limped over the finish line he complained of problems with his left thigh and hamstring.

Greene immediately announced he would not attempt to defend his world title in the 200m, and said he had withdrawn from the US 400m relay squad.

Greene said: "I don't want to let my ego get in the way.

"If it was up to me, with how I feel, I would still go out there and try to run, but I don't want to damage the team."

Even after pulling out of the 200m, Greene said after his victory that he was still considering running the relay, but his condition did not improve overnight.

Ato Boldon later joined his training partner on the sidelines.

Boldon complained of back pain after finishing fourth behind Greene in the 100m.
