Formula 1: Diniz aims to restor Brazilian pride

Brazilian Priscillo Diniz fired a five-under-par 67 to race clear of the field early in the second round of the Royal Westmoreland Barbados Open.

The 52-year-old from Sao Paulo, who opened with a 64 on Thursday, held a six-shot clubhouse lead over late starter David Creamer of England with a 13-under-par total of 131 in this European Seniors Tour event.

Diniz, who won the European Seniors Tour Match Play Championship last October, admitted: "If I win tomorrow I certainly won't get the same headlines as the Brazilian football team, but that doesn't worry me.

"You can't compete with football in my country.

"I am only thinking about winning for me and my family. I think I was once eight shots clear in the Brazilian PGA many years ago, but this a much higher quality field this week."

Diniz picked up five birdies and did not make a mistake as he streaked away from his rivals.

"Actually I played better than when I shot 64 yesterday," he said. "From tee to green was great, although I missed some good chances.

Of the morning starters, only Americans Jeff Van Wagenen and George Burns made a move towards the leader.

Van Wagenen, a winner on the European Seniors Tour in 2000, shot a second round 69 for a five-under-par total of 139.

He shares that mark with Burns, who followed a 67 with a 72.

The Caribbean favourite, Jamaica's Delroy Cambridge, produced a solid effort on his Seniors Tour debut.

After finishing fourth in last year's Qualifying School, Cambridge has been looking forward to getting started.

"I've played some mini Seniors Tour events in Florida to prepare for this and I aim to play a full schedule," he said.
