Worthington Cup our best chance - Burley

George Burley has targeted the Worthington Cup as Ipswich's best chance of returning to the club's halcyon days of European glory.

Burley's fourth-placed Premiership side are still tracking European qualification on three fronts but the Scot believes the best chance will be through England's second cup competition.

First Division Birmingham stand in the way in the two-legged semi-final.

"There's two teams keeping us from Europe," said Burley.

"This is our best chance for qualifying but I haven't given up on the FA Cup or the league.

"I have told the players to savour the game because you don't get too many major semi-finals in your career."

Burley will be up against Mick Mills, City's assistant manager, who was the Scot's former team-mate and Town's captain from the successful campaign of the 1970s and 80s when the Blues won the Uefa Cup during a spell of nine out of 10 seasons in the Continent's cup competitions.

"Those were tremendous days," reflected former full-back Burley. "We still have a lot to do to get through but we a fairly close.

"Everybody talks about the 70s and 80s, now we are in 2001 and everybody is talking about Ipswich again."
