Taylor ‘ready to conquer’ the professional ranks

Katie Taylor marked her decision to turn professional with a declaration of intent, claiming she is “ready to conquer” the paid game just as she has done in amateur boxing.

And from the whispers emerging from her support team regarding their early ambitious plans, the 2012 Olympic champion will be put on a year-long path to world domination – in terms of boxing, financial success and global profile.

“Today marks the end of an amazing amateur campaign but the start of an exciting new chapter as a pro. Ready to conquer!” Taylor tweeted yesterday afternoon after official confirmation she had signed a deal to turn professional with Matchroom Boxing.

The agreement with Eddie Hearn’s Essex-based promotional outfit will see the 30-year-old Bray native make her professional debut at London’s SSE Wembley Arena on November 26, live on Sky Sports, followed by a second bout just two weeks later on the support bill to IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua’s title defence in Manchester Arena.

While Taylor’s opening contests will take place in England — the motivation for those dates being immediate TV exposure to a broad audience — it is understood that a homecoming bout is likely to take place in Dublin in 2017.

It appears unlikely the Bray woman will fight regularly in Ireland due to promotional and financial considerations, with Taylor’s management team eager to take up fight dates in Scandinavia and the United States, where legitimate female opponents and bigger pay days are available.

Manager Brian Peters — who guided Dubliner Bernard Dunne to a WBA world title — knows the US market from his experience in helping two-time European champion Matthew Macklin to healthy six-figure Stateside purses, so such a plan will surely be well laid out.
