Heartbreak for Regina Mundi as Ballyshannon secure All-Ireland crown

Coláiste Choilmcille, Ballyshannon beat Regina Mundi of Cork by 42-31 in the U16B Girls cup final yesterday with the help of a 10-0 run in the third quarter.

“The girls had the heads right, to be honest,” said Ballyshannon coach Julianne Murphy. “We just told them to keep control of the ball and don’t let the other team dictate the pace and it came out well in the end.”

Regina Mundi’s fast break had put them ahead at half-time. Katie Walshe notched an eight-point second quarter while Ellie Leen chipped in a three-point play for a 20-19 lead before Ballyshannon took control.

Abbey Vocational School of Donegal Town said their victory over St Aloysius of Carrigtwohill was the culmination of a season of hard training. The Glebe school came through the U16C Girls final with 35-25 win.

Winning coach Orlagh Carr said: “The girls were tremendous in the build up. They’ve been out there three times a week since the start of the year and it all worked out on the day.”

A 16-0 run either side of the half time break proved decisive with Eilish McGovern earning the MVP award and Sophie Carr finishing with 12 points.

Coláiste Phádraig Lucan are the Subway All-Ireland U16A Boys Cup champions after a tense 45-44 win over St. Malachy’s College of Belfast. MVP Kris Arcilla shook off a stomach bug to hit what turned out to be the game-winner but there was still plenty of time for drama before the final buzzer.

“I’ve had a few matches like that over the years but that one takes the biscuit,” said winning Coach David Gray. “It was serious stuff. “

St Malachy’s seemed to be in the driving seat when Niall McGinnity upped the ante on defence and CJ Fulton hit a nerveless jump shot. They were sooned pegged back by Kabir Akanbi’s deep two and Arcilla made it 45-44 from the free-throw line with six seconds remaining.

Coláiste Phádraig still needed a well-timed block from Max Amadasun to reject a game-winning attempt before Malachy’s found the net with a last gasp effort. The shot was released a fraction of a second after the buzzer sounded to give the Lucan school the win.

Waterford’s representatives at the National Basketball Arena put on a winning performance as De La Salle beat St Peter’s Dunboyne 68-35 in the U16B Boys final.

St Peter’s Dunboyne came into the game with cup final experience as U16C Cup champions from 2015, but it was De La Salle who had the brighter start and an 11-0 run in the third quarter put them firmly in control.
