Stick to what you know, lads: athletes injured playing other sports

Rory McIlroy’s participation at next week’s Open Championship looks to be in grave doubt after the world number one suffered a freak injury.

The defending champion posted a picture of himself wearing a protective boot on his left leg after, in his own words, suffering a “total rupture” of his left ankle “in a soccer kickabout with friends on Saturday”.

McIlroy isn’t the first sportsperson to suffer injury while participating in another sport.
