Lisnagarvey will be looking for sweet revenge against Church of Ireland

Hockey: Lisnagarvey and Cork Church of Ireland’s fortunes are again intertwined as they clash in the men’s Irish Junior Cup quarter-finals at Comber Road tomorrow.

Lisnagarvey will be looking for sweet revenge against Church of Ireland

While this competition is for second XIs, both clubs will likely feature members of their respective first teams that were involved in C of I’s epic 4-3 Irish Senior Cup victory at the Hillsborough venue last month.

That was labelled as one of the biggest shocks in the cup’s history, coming as C of I made the most of just seven circle entries while Garvey were wasteful with their 36. C of I could also yet wreck Garvey’s hopes of making the Irish Hockey League semi-finals when they meet at Garryduff next month but for now, the Ulster men will be seeking revenge against the 2009 Irish Junior Cup winners.

Cork Harlequins are the other Munster side still standing in the IJC, albeit one round further back; their visit to Annadale was frosted off last time out so they will try again at Lough Moss tomorrow.

In the ladies IJC quarter-finals, there are two Munster sides left but one will be gone come tomorrow evening as Bandon and C of I lock horns in West Cork.

John Dennis’s Bandon side have had a love affair with this competition recently, reaching the last four in 2014 and knocking out Dublin big guns Hermes and Old Alex en route to the last eight.

They should have the edge in terms of experience over a C of I outfit littered with Munster underage representative talent such as Louise Egan and Christina Dring, but the Garryduff girls showed their mettle in seeing off local rivals Cork Harlequins on strokes on a horrible Harlequin Park day in round two.

Elsewhere, the identity of the women’s Munster Senior Cup finalists will be known before the weekend is out. Cork Harlequins were favourites to advance against Ashton late last night while Catholic Institute will be in a similar boat for their semi-final clash against Limerick. UCC look likely to have to play two games in just over 24 hours; they meet Fermoy in the first round of the Munster Senior Plate tomorrow and if — as is likely — they advance, they must take on Cashel/New Inn in the last four on Sunday.

The men’s Munster Senior Cup’s marquee clash is in Bandon where the hosts are gunning for a first victory over UCC since Denis Pritchard took over.

College nicked a draw in the league clash at the same venue before Wesley Brownlow’s hat-trick gave them a narrow win at Mardyke.

More goals can be expected, as well as another tight game.
