Demons take on Thunder in likely league clincher

Basketball: Men’s Premier league leaders C & S UCC Demons will face the acid test tomorrow when they play second placed Travelodge Swords Thunder in a game that could well decide the destination of the title.

Demons take on Thunder in likely league clincher

The Dublin side are formidable opponents on their home court and Demons will need to be at their best.

It has been a magnificent season to date for Demons, fresh from their National Cup success, as they attempt to win their 14th consecutive league game.

For player coach Colin O’Reilly getting a good start will be vital as Demons trailed Thunder by 12 points in their recent cup semi final clash.

O’Reilly said: “Our plan will be basic as we intend to keep doing what’s kept us focused all season and maintain pressure for 40 minutes.”

The Demons boss has a different strategy to many of his opposing coaches in the league.

“Many people think that starters have to play 40 minutes but at times bench players can be better if you use them at the ideal time in games,” added Colin.

“Having the right rotations on the floor is crucial and hopefully we will have enough coming down the stretch.”

The mood in the Swords camp is bullish as coach Dave Baker looks forward to what he termed as the most important game in the club’s history.

“We know if we fail to win the league title is almost certainly wrapped up for Demons,” said Baker.

Demons are still without the injured Niall Murphy and Carleton Cuff with Swords declaring a fully fit squad.

UCD Marian will be hoping to keep their top four prospects alive when they host UL Eagles.

The students got back to winning ways after their cup final defeat when defeating Belfast Star and they will be expected to see off the Shannonsiders.

Killester are another side hoping for a top four place and they have an interesting home derby clash against DCU Saints.

It has been a tough campaign for the BFG Neptune player coach Ger Noonan who will be hoping to avoid his seventh consecutive defeat when they host Templeogue.

Belfast Star are another side hoping to get back on the winning track and they should have too much firepower for Dublin Inter.

The Women’s Premier league also has some key games down for decision with tomorrow’s Singletons Supervalu Brunell against DCU Mercy topping the bill.

Brunell are unbeaten since November and coach Kieran O’Leary is hoping their momentum can carry them to another win.

“DCU Mercy are a very tough side but in our present vein of form I would not fear playing any side in this league and let’s hope we can give our supporters plenty to cheer about,” O’Leary said.

Leaders Team Montenotte travel to Clontarf to play their recent cup final conquerors Killester with captain Claire Rockall likely to miss out with an ankle injury.

The Cork side were impressive last weekend when defeating Meteors but coach Mark Scannell has warned his troops what to expect from a wounded side.

“Killester will be disappointed with their cup final performance and we will need to be prepared for a possible backlash.”
