Singletons Supervalu Brunell scored a shock win over Team Montenotte in the National Cup quarter-final second leg at Upper Glanmire Sports Centre last night, but the champions advanced after their 25 points victory in the first leg.
Brunell coach Kieran O’Leary praised his troops’ gallant effort. “I think we answered a lot of critics tonight but the damage was done in the first leg when we failed to show up and hopefully we can build on this win.”
In the opening quarter both teams traded baskets for long periods but a late Katie Hannemann basket ensured the teams were tied at 13 points each.
The physical stakes increased in the second quarter but the visitors were superb and deservedly led 42-30 at the break.
Montenotte managed to reduce the deficit in the opening two minutes of the restart with four unanswered baskets, but once again the class of Brunell saw them regain a 12-point lead in the 26th minute.
The home side relied too much on shooting outside the perimeter and Brunell exposed them to command a 14-point lead entering the final quarter.
In a pulsating final period Brunell threw the kitchen sink at Montenotte, but the northside club unfortunately made their exit from the championship despite running out 15-point winners.
