McIlroy giving back to the sport that made him

There has been a lot written about Rory McIlroy in the days since he won the Open Championship.

McIlroy giving back to the sport that made him

Mentions of the third leg of a career grand slam, £975,000 prize money and the bet his dad Gerry placed 10 years ago on him winning the Claret Jug by the time he was 25 are all related to what he has got out of the game that he plays – and gets paid for – so well.

But the 25-year-old is also giving back to the sport which has made him millions. He and a number of fellow professionals have all donated items for an auction in aid of a former county junior player Alex Lewis. In November last year the 34-year-old, who at his best played off a handicap of two, collapsed and was rushed to intensive care after developing streptococcal toxic shock syndrome.
