Fans get second chance to see Taylor

Promoter Brian Peters has confirmed that due to an “unprecedented demand” for tickets, which has resulted in Katie Taylor’s fight at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Dublin, February 24 being quickly sold out, a second fight date has been added on Friday, March 22.

Fans get second chance to see Taylor

“Katie’s absolutely delighted with the support she’s getting,” noted Peters. “This date will hopefully give her fans who missed out on tickets for her February show another chance to see her in action.

“She needs fights as preparation for the defence of her European title.

“Sofya Ochigava, who she defeated in the Olympic final, is going to be gunning for her so hopefully this will help with her build-up. These dates give Katie the opportunity to box at a venue fitting of her stature after her heroics in London and we have an opportunity to do something unique with the whole event, with a cultural flavour and artistic twist added to the night.”

Meanwhile, Irish Sports Council chairman Kieran Mulvey yesterday praised what he described as “the best ever Olympic and Paralympic performances by Irish sportswomen.”

He also noted that while sports funding had been cut in the recent budget, the reason it wasn’t as severe as had been expected was based on increased participation in sport as well as the massive success of Irish athletes at the highest level across the summer.

“It is worth highlighting that the performance at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games were the best ever by Irish sportswomen. It is also worth highlighting the role of women in London in leadership positions in the teams; as coaches; in the media; as officials; and in just about every element of the Olympic and Paralympics Games.

“The gender gap is closing in every aspect of sport; this is as it should be and is warmly welcomed. It is worth highlighting today that the Irish Sports Council has invested more than €40m in the Women in Sport programme since its inception in 2005. Its focus is on promoting female participation in sport through programmes operated by national governing bodies of sport and local sports partnerships.”
