There was better luck for Cork Harlequins in Ulster as David Eakins’ treble backboned their 4-1 victory at Antrim — they’ll play Cookstown at home next up — while Munster men played pivotal roles in other ties.
Jonny Bruton equalised three minutes from time to send YMCA’s tie with Corinthian to extra-time and eventually a shootout, and the Cork man nailed one of the strokes to send the Milltown side through. Waterford native David Molloy scored Pembroke’s insurance goal as they beat Annadale 4-2, while Nick Burns was on target for UCD in their 4-1 win at Belfast Harlequins. Mitch Darling reversed home 15 seconds from time to give Three Rock Rovers a 2-1 wins over Glenanne, while Fingal thrashed Mossley 6-1.
In Munster, Ashton came within three minutes of ruining Catholic Institute’s 15-month 100% record before going down 2-1 in a league tie moved to Ursulines Blackrock.
Michelle Barry gave them a shock lead but Naomi Carroll deflected home to tie it up before Eimear Cregan cracked home the winner.
Irish international hitwoman Miriam Crowley returned to UCC colours for the first time in over a year, having played with Hermes last term, and she and Olivia Roycroft shared four goals as the students made a big statement with a 4-0 demolition Cork C of I.
Cork Harlequins’ goalfest continued as they made it 30 from 4 games, Lesley Ann Daunt bagging a hat-trick in their 8-0 win over Limerick.
