Eagles dare to dream of double
Demons entered the tie as favourites but were always chasing the game, as the Limerick side led 46-36 at the interval and continued that domination until the final whistle.
UL coach Mark Keenan praised his players commitment: “We won the national cup when few gave us a chance and now we have beaten Killester and UCC Demons on their own terrain in the last fortnight so I think we deserve a crack at achieving the double. The difference was how we structured our defence and now we have a hard week ahead in preparation for the final against DCU Saints.”
In the other semi-final, DCU Saints easily accounted for fellow Dublin outfit, UCD Marian, 82-55. Saints, inspired by Martin Provizors, led 45-31 at the break and there was little letup after the restart.
Women’s SuperLeague favourites UL were outstanding as they booked their place in the final when accounted for Waterford Wildcats at the UL Arena. UL laid the foundation for the win with a top-class first-half performance that saw them command a 16-point lead at the interval. Inspired by Louise Galvin (20) and Rachael Vanderwal (16), UL were never threatened and ran out easy 80-50 winners.
The shock of the weekend was at the Neptune Stadium yesterday when Team Montenotte defeated DCU Mercy 79-68 in the second Women’s SuperLeague semi-final.
Despite the Cork side getting a better start to the game they trailed 18-16 at the end of opening quarter but produced an outstanding second quarter display to lead 38-30 at the interval. DCU were always struggling at both ends in the second half and the brilliant Claire Rockall who amassed a season high 38 points ensured Team Montenotte their place in the decider.
